Meyer & Holler Wikipedia

It is not the only old thing in the bar, not by far. In fact, pretty much everything in the tavern is even older than bartender Marcy Skowronski, and she’s 88. This includes the two oldest sanctioned bowling lanes in the nation, an integral feature of this tavern that was opened in 1908 by Marcy’s father-in-law, Mike Skowronski, who gave the tavern his last name at the time. Of all these oil buildings, perhaps the most stunning was the now-demolished Richfield Oil Building, located at Fifth and Flower Streets. Draped in black and gold glazed terra cotta, this Art Deco gem stood out among the downtown skyline with its 136-foot oil derrick-shaped tower with word "RICHFIELD" spelled down the sides. Designed by Morgan, Walls and Clements, the 1929 skyscraper stood at 15 floors with three basements.

The Milwaukee Building Company was established in 1905 as a design and construction firm, with Mendel Meyer as president, Gabriel Holler as vice president, and Julius C. Schneider as Secretary. The Isaac Milbank house is a rare and beautiful house, little changed from when it was constructed in 1911. The owner of the Isaac Milbank House at 236 Adelaide, and his project team received the 2013 Restoration Award for their comprehensive restoration of this iconic Craftsman. Holker’s recently acquired property sits on a walled and gated parcel spanning almost a half-acre of land, with a circular driveway and an attached two-car garage fronting the two-tone and wood-accented structure.

You Can Still Die From World War I Dangers in France's Red Zones

You must be an Urban Milwaukee member to leave a comment. This is one of those places with a cigar box behind the bar. It has been a long time since there were any Havana King Cigars (2 for 29 cents) in the box, but it is a useful box for holding stuff, so there it is. The Havana King team were the bowling champs in 1933. Back then, before Prohibition ended,  when you wanted to celebrate a win with a drink, your liquor was served from bottles stashed in a baby’s crib. What cops would look into a baby’s crib for liquor?

While the house is asymmetrical in design, the repetition of these elements, in different patterns, provides both a sense of balance and rhythm in the house. The abundant use of natural materials—such as the rough-textured shingles that cover exterior walls— suggests honest integrity. Meanwhile numerous windows, some quite large, bring nature into the home by allowing for views, sunlight and fresh air. In keeping with Craftsman tradition, low-pitched gabled roofs and flat, open balconies above the first floor create a strong horizontal effect. Well-kept lawns and gardens surrounding the residence (featuring several fine mature trees as well as matching outbuildings) further complement the Craftsman design.

The name evolved, from Mike’s Tap to Gene and Marcy’s – still visible from the outside – to Gene and Marcy’s Holler House “because everybody was hollering in here” to finally the Holler House. The family connection, however, stayed consistent with Haefke taking over in 2019, defeating the infamous third generation curse that can strike family-run small businesses. Company office towers sprung up to accommodate all these employees working in one of the city's most influential industries. When oil companies were ready to flex their economic power with their own structures, they turned to the leading architects of the day to help them construct a physical manifestation of their industry's power and reach. With the exception of one, these buildings still stand thanks mostly to adaptive reuse and are now local, state and national historic landmarks. City, county and state officials plan to phase out oil drilling in Los Angeles and California in order to correct long-festering environmental wrongs.

The bar also features bobbleheads, boxing memorabilia, newspapers from back when Babe Ruth played the game — for Boston — and a more recent, but still old, baseball bat hanging from the ceiling. The Great Bra Rehanging took place on June 14th, 2013. The event is commemorated in T-shirts available at the bar, as are shirts from the tavern’s 100th anniversary in 2008.

Between those contributions and the many others who came out for drinks and company safely when they were able, a community was there to make sure Holler House stayed hollering and certainly not forgotten. As one who lived and worked in the building until she was 19, Haefke remembers everything. She can tell you why the tables have coverings on them now.

Isaac Milbank was a prosperous businessman in Los Angeles. Co-founder of the Borden Milk Company, Milbank was also an oil investor and the holder of several firearms patents as well as an active participant in local business and social affairs. Amenities include a movie theater, fitness room and an office, as well as a separate guest house sporting a kitchenette and full bath. Marcy still works at the bar, usually the early shift, which begins at 4 p.m. Her son-in-law Todd C. Stuckert, who now owns the business, takes over later, when a younger crowd comes in, including a number of bowlers who head for the lanes downstairs. The subterranean bowling alleys have no seating — not enough room for that — and no automatic pinsetters, so neighborhood kids do that task.

Appalachian traditions should be valued and celebrated. Appalachia is a living place with vibrant cultures. These artists create with a sensibility informed by this region’s unique context and culture. This magnificent home was built in 1911, during the first phase of construction on Adelaide Drive. Although many impressive homes have since been constructed on Adelaide, this “Craftsman masterpiece” still sets the standard for architectural excellence.
