Find pineapple barbecue pork buns, coconut and taro cake, garlic spare ribs, deep-fried taro pastries, among a long list of favorites. Tasty Box Dim Sum is a fast-casual dim sum spot (not to be confused with Cantonese barbecue restaurant Tasty Box located in the same plaza). While there is some outdoor seating, most people prefer to grab dim sum to-go. Hone in on the restaurant’s more unique items, like pu’er barbecue buns that are infused with tea flavor and quail egg siu mai.

Dim sum variety during the pandemic is not as vast as it used to be, but the restaurant has been slowly trying to offer more items. Although dim sum is typically a breakfast or brunch meal, Lunasia serves it from morning until night. Some menu items are on the gimmicky side — like the truffle siu mai, caviar siu mai, lobster rice rolls, and the super-sized shrimp har gow dumplings — Lunasia’s traditional dishes are solid. There are a number of modernized takes on dishes like the scallop dumpling with squid ink and the fried sweet potato mochi balls with salted egg yolk that cements Lunasia as the go-to for upscale dim sum.

Lunasia offers online ordering, as well as curbside pick up, but don’t expect to see push carts here. For those who don’t wish to trek out to the San Gabriel Valley, Kingdom Dimsum by Thai Town in Hollywood is a quaint eatery featuring a few tables that offers fresh dim sum. Customers place orders at the register, pay, and await the freshly steamed dishes. While the selection is smaller than other dim sum establishments, the classics are on offer. With a 90-item menu, finding well-executed dim sum standards of har gao, siu mai and cheong feng is easy. There are tons of offals as well, from smoked pork hock to tripe, and two styles of chicken feet. Best time to have dim sum here is late weekday afternoon, as the weekend lines run up to two hours, even with more than 200 seats. For great dim sum without the wait, head to Grand Harbour in Temple City.

Also come by for a quick game of pool, complimentary for our guests. Everything else on the menu seems also just a little bit better than the competition. The har gow is just bigger than anywhere else; the char siu bun carries an additional coconut scent.

Don’t forget to order the almond souffle for dessert, which consists of hot almond milk with gingko nuts wrapped in a dome of puff pastry. The restaurant is helmed by 77-year-old Tony Ying, a third-generation Chinese restaurateur who can be seen working in the restaurant every day. The dim sum is made in-house, with the staff visible in the open kitchen rolling out dough, steaming, baking, and frying various dishes. Other favorites include egg custard tarts, pan-fried turnip cakes, scallion pancake, and xiao long bao dumplings.

The new restaurant will feature indoor seating for approximately 100 guests along with a 20-foot bar and private event spaces. For the first time, Dim Sum House also will get a spacious outdoor dining area with seating for up to another 100 guests. Jane Guo and Jackson Fu, the mother and son duo behind one of Philadelphia's top dim sum restaurants, is headed to Northern Liberties later this year with a third location of Dim Sum House by Jane G's. The region of Jiang Nan (or South of the river) is comprised of mainly Shanghai, Canton, & ZheJiang cuisines.

Jane Guo and Jackson Fu late Wednesday announced a brand new third location for Dim Sum House by Jane G’s, planned for the Liberty Square development, at 1214 N. Guo and Fu had been scouting locations for a new restaurant in the area of Fishtown and Northern Liberties over the past few years after holding a pop-up there prior to the pandemic. With existing locations in Center City and University City, Dim Sum House is now set to join a large ground floor space inside the Liberty Square apartment complex, 1214 N. The fast-growing area brings together the neighborhoods of Northern Liberties, Fishtown and Olde Kensington.

The menu here is extremely diverse, carrying nearly every known dim sum dish in America. This is one of the best in dim sum price-to-performance ratios, especially after factoring in the typically short wait. The second outpost of Dim Sum House by Jane G’s will serve many of the dishes for which it is known in University City.

The two are joined in the family by another well-known member of the culinary community. Fu’s wife, and Guo’s daughter-in-law, Sally Song owns the award-winning Dim Sum Garden in Chinatown. This location will have the largest selection of beers for any Dim Sum House location with eight on tap and around two dozen in total. The opening date is expected later this year or early in 2023, with more details to come.
